What is an EVP?

EVP Stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon. EVP's are voices or other similar sounds caught on audio recorders that weren't present when the recording was made. There are various methods that people employ to help them capture an EVP. One popular method is the use of "White Noise." Without getting to technical, white noise is a term used for noises that remain fairly content, such as a fan or pure radio static. It is that that recording with white noise softly in the background helps to give more EVP's. We however at Chicagoland Paranormal Society usually record without any special techniques. We've tried with and without white noise and seem to get a better quality without white noise.

What is an EMF Detector?

This is a device that can detect electromagnetic fields. It is believed that a ghost creates these fields when trying to manifest itself. Electromagnetic fields occur in every electronic appliance and are all over houses since every house has a multitude of electronics and wiring. When using EMF Detectors inside a house a during a paranormal investigation a paranormal investigator must do a sweep of every room that he is going to use the detector in. He does this to create a sort of map of what fields already exist in the room and where, so that he can rule out any of the existing fields. Many times a paranormal investigator can track these fields around the room when there seems to be no reason for them to do so.

Why do you investigate at night?

For some reason most evidence in a paranormal investigation has been recorded during the night. 3 a.m. is considered to be the high point of paranormal activity. There is also a known sound phenomenon, called sound refraction that allows sounds to travel further at night.
